Automaker Report Cards: Honda and Subaru Lead, Hyundai Makes Strides, Chrysler Lags

YONKERS, NY — Honda and Subaru have earned class leader status for building the best all-around vehicles for American drivers, according to the Automaker Report Cards published in Consumer Reports’ 2010 Annual Auto Issue. This is the fourth consecutive year that Honda has topped CR’s list. At the opposite end of the annual ranking is Chrysler, which fared even worse than last year. However, Chrysler had one recommended vehicle this year, the Ram pickup, compared to no recommended vehicles last year.

Tied with an overall score of 77 out of 100 points, Honda and Subaru were followed by Toyota (74) (Recommendations for eight recalled Toyota models were temporarily suspended), Hyundai (73) and Nissan and Volkswagen tied at (72) in overall score.

Although the best vehicles overall are being built by Honda and Subaru, South Korean carmaker Hyundai, and its subsidiary, Kia, has shown the most dramatic improvement, jumping to fourth place from ninth last year.

The full report, “Rating the carmakers” is in the Annual Auto Issue, which goes on sale March 2. It is also available to subscribers at www.ConsumerReports.org.

The overall score for each automaker is based on the average of its vehicles’ overall scores in Consumer Reports’ road tests and their average predicted-reliability ratings from Consumer Reports’ Annual Auto Survey. Manufacturers received a report card only if five or more of their vehicles were tested.

Honda continues to make many of the best all-around vehicles. Overall, its Honda and Acura models, are the most reliable vehicles in CR’s predicted-reliability ratings. The most recent models from Honda, however, have not shown the same dedication to interior quality and fuel economy that earlier models did. Despite its outstanding reliability, CR doesn’t recommend the new Insight because of subpar emergency handling and a compromised rear seat.

The redesigned 2010 Legacy sedan and Outback wagon raised Subaru’s overall test score from 78 points to 81. That helped contribute to its tie with Honda in CR’s rankings. However, Consumer Reports no longer recommends the Subaru Impreza WRX because its subscribers reported a relatively high number of problems, including transmission troubles, in the latest survey. Last year, CR recommended every Subaru model.

Hyundai/Kia showed a dramatic improvement in CR’s report-card rankings, led by newer models such as the Hyundai Genesis and Elantra sedans, Santa Fe SUV, and Kia Optima sedan. Their reliability continues to improve with only the Kia Sedona minivan below average.

Not all Asian models are reliable or good performers. Although many models from Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi are very reliable, several scored too low in CR’s tests to be Recommended. Toyota recently issued safety recalls and temporarily stopped sales of eight models because of rare occurrences of a sticking accelerator pedal. Consumer Reports has suspended its recommendations of those models, which caused Toyota’s percentage of recommended vehicles to drop off by almost half.

The past year was especially rough for American automakers but there is some good news: reliability of some Ford models now rivals their competitors from Honda and Toyota. But in CR’s testing, Ford vehicles were not always among the best performers. Although the Flex and Fusion scored highly, most models from Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln rate only midpack. Still, the freshened Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan are excellent overall packages that provide good performance and fuel economy. Consumer Reports recommends 75 percent of the Ford models that were tested, up from 70 percent last year.

New models from GM now rank among the best in CR’s testing, although overall reliability, even among some of the new models, still lags behind most of the competition. GM models that score well in CR’s tests include the Buick Enclave and LaCrosse, Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Corvette, Equinox, Malibu, and Traverse, and GMC Acadia.

Chrysler’s grades fell to the bottom of the class, and it is the only automaker to drop from last year in all measures. Most models from the manufacturer have noisy, inefficient, unrefined powertrains; subpar interiors; and poor visibility. The Ram 1500 pickup is the only Chrysler model on Consumer Reports’ Recommended list.

If all that consumers cared about were performance, comfort, and safety, Mercedes and Volkswagen (including Audi) models would go to the head of the class. They have the highest average test scores because they ride and handle especially well, have comfortable seats, and have relatively good fuel economy and acceleration. In recent years those vehicles have lagged in reliability. But that has begun to change, with several models from Mercedes and Volkswagen, as well as BMW, Saab, and Volvo, attaining average or better predicted reliability.

The best vehicles often set the standard for their competitors to follow or improve upon. In the end, it’s the consumer who ends up the ultimate winner.

January GREAT Press On Subaru!

MORE GREAT NEWS ON SUBARU IN JANUARY, 2010!
Subaru continues to receive outstanding reviews from press. Some of our brand’s press highlights in January include the following:

1. Kelly Blue Book (KBB) reported that Subaru vehicles hold their value the best of any
brand. In 2009, the depreciation rate for all vehicles in the market for 2005-2008 model
years was 8.5 percent. However, used Subaru vehicles for these same model years
actually increased in value by 1.3 percent.

2. Cars.com announced on January 15, that the Subaru Outback was voted their “Best
Wagon” for 2010. In addition, the 2010 Forester was also named by cars.com as their
“Best Vehicle for Families”.

3. The Subaru Forester received the R.L. Polk Owner Loyalty Award in the small crossover
utility segment besting RAV4, CRV, Ford Escape, Santa Fe, etc. at the North American
International Auto Show in Detroit.

4. The January 21 New York Times featured the 2010 Legacy and Outback in their
automotive section. The Times noted… “This could be Subaru’s manifest destiny, as the
maker of handy AWD vehicles tries to move beyond its heartland in the great, icy north
to places where frost is seen mainly in the freezer. The new 2010 Legacy Sedan and
Outbacks … have significantly more rear legroom, much better fuel economy and
upgrades in safety …they are not just for Yankee blizzards anymore.

5. Jim Henry, writing on his BNET blog noted, “The longer I’m around the auto industry,
the more I realize the paramount importance of exterior styling. The improved exterior
styling is the best reason I can think of to account for the fact that Subaru just finished
2009 with a record sales year in the U.S. while nearly every other brand struggled”.

Our press just keeps coming in and it gets better every day. It is no wonder why Subaru is
attracting more and more potential customers to our brand.

SUBARU OF AMERICA REPORTS AN ALL TIME SALES RECORD!

News Release Issued: September 1, 2009 3:44 PM EDT

Subaru of America, Inc. Reports All-Time Sales Records
- The Company Has Record Sales for Best Month Ever -
- Subaru Forester, Impreza and Legacy Break All Previous Records
-

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that it had the company's best sales month ever with a 52-percent increase in August sales. The company sold 28,683 units this August versus 18,932 units in August 2008 and had an 11-percent gain year-over-year. Subaru sales for August 2009 also showed a 31-percent increase over July 2009 Subaru sales, which was also a record month for the company.

Record-breaking results for three Subaru models include: a 76-percent increase in sales for the Subaru Forester with 11,870 units sold, a 30-percent increase in sales for the Subaru Impreza with 6,590 units sold and a 49-percent increase in sales for the Subaru Legacy with 3,569 units sold for the month. In addition, Subaru received the distinction of being named the only automotive manufacturer with 2009 "Top Safety Picks" for all 2010 models by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). To receive the "Top Safety Pick" designation, a manufacturer has to continually improve its crash safety requirements and each product has to be at the top level of crash protection in front, side and rear crash impacts.
"While the CARS program helped fuel our August results, the fact that this is our third consecutive record month reinforces that our products have connected with consumers," said Tim Colbeck, senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc. "Well before our success with the CARS program, we were having great results and I am confident that with the newly introduced 2010 Subaru Outback and Legacy models, we will continue to be successful."

"Subaru has the perfect products to capitalize in the ever-growing crossover utility segment with the new 2010 Outback and Forester models," said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc. "In the sedan segment, we have an unprecedented opportunity to gain sales and market share with the all-new 2010 Subaru Legacy. The Legacy, built on an all-new platform with a longer wheelbase and increased width for greater interior room also achieves 31 mpg highway. When combined with those attributes and All-Wheel Drive technology, as is standard with all Subaru vehicles, we think it is the best overall value in the sedan segment," Doll continued.

SUBARU NAMED THE ONLY MANUFACTURER WITH 2009 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICKS FOR ALL 2010 MODELS!

Subaru Named The Only Manufacturer With 2009 IIHS Top Safety Picks for All 2010 models

PRNewswireCHERRY HILL, N.J.

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The all-new 2010 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback have been named 2009 'Top Safety Picks' by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety.

To qualify for Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of "good" in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control. Criteria to win are tough because the award is intended to drive continued safety improvements such as top crash test ratings and the rapid addition of electronic stability control, which is standard on the Legacy and Outback.

"Building safe vehicles is one of the things our customers have come to know and expect from us," said Tom Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc. "To have this endorsement by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety for every Subaru vehicle in our line-up is a tribute to our engineers and reinforces to consumers that we focus not only on manufacturing fun-to-drive vehicles, but also vehicles that are durable and dependable."

"Recognizing vehicles at the head of the class for safety helps consumers distinguish the best overall choices without having to sort through multiple test results," says Institute president Adrian Lund.

About IIHS
The Institute's frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures recorded on a Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test.

Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on two instrumented SID-IIs dummies, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle's structural performance during the impact. Injury measures obtained from the two dummies, one in the driver seat and the other in the back seat behind the driver, are used to determine the likelihood that a driver and/or passenger in a similar real-world crash would sustain serious injury to various parts of the body. The movements and contacts of the dummies' heads during the test also are evaluated. Structural performance is based on measurements indicating the amount of B-pillar intrusion into the occupant compartment.

Rear crash protection is rated according to a two-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry -- the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average-size man. Seats with good or acceptable restraint geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they can't be positioned to protect many people.

2010 Subaru Legacy and Outback! WOW!

Over this past weekend, a group of us decided to drive down to the New York Auto Show and personally inspect that all-new 2010 Subaru Legacy and Outback. This annual visit, by this group, is now somewhat a tradition. We go down together, walk the show and end up out at a great NYC restaurant for a late dinner. So, on Friday, Bob Bennett (from Subaru), Brian DuBosar (our General Sales Manager), Jose Columna (my neighbor!), Ken Scanzio (from Subaru, and a newcomer) and myself embarked upon our annual visit together.

The first thing I noticed was how so much of the "ever present" excitment was, well, not present. Obviously, what we have read in the paper about the terrible results in the auto industry were very visable at this show with smaller booths and fewer concept cars. In accordance with our tradition, we walked the booths of the other manufacturers' first - then - decided to visit the Subaru booth.

The lack of excitement evidenced thoughout the show was definately not in the Subaru booth. The crowds were heavy and the lines were long in order to sit in either the new 2010 Subaru Legacy or the 2010 Outback. The introduction of the 2010 Outback was actually a "surprise", as Subaru had only notified the press that the 2010 Legacy would be introduced.

As a dealer, I always "hold my breath" at a new model introduction. I get nervous and think to myself things like "Is it possible they can improve upon the award winning models we already have?". Well - Congratulations Subaru Engineers - you did it. Both of these cars are, simply, amazing. In fact, we were so happy with the new product, that we had to "cap off" the evening with a great dinner at Ben Benson's Steakhouse!

I am looking forward to receiving the first of these vehicles in August of this year. We will share information on these vehicles as we get it to ensure that you are "in the know".

By the way, don't look past the current 2009 Subaru Legacy and Outback. If you like the current design and features (they are loaded with standard features this year!) please see us for a great deal with low rate financing!

2010 Legacy Concept - A HUGE HIT FOR SUBARU!

The 2010 Subaru Legacy Concept was a huge hit for Subaru during it's introduction at the recent Detroit Auto Show. The concept car is larger than the existing Legacy - being about the same size at the current Toyota Camry. It looks great. The line are wonderful and the vehicle is very stylish. In a previous blog posting, I have listed a copy of Subaru's official announcement describing the 2010 Subaru Legacy Concept vehicle. However, I came across these videos. One of these videos shows the lines of the vehicle and how it looks in motion. The second video is a commentary from the actual designer of the car. Too many times, consumers are unable to see who really designed a vehicle and the reasons for the design intent. This is a great video so that you can see why the designer designed the 2010 Subaru Legacy in this manner.

This is all so important since the styling cues you see in this vehicle should be very visible in the production version of the 2010 Subaru Legacy!

All-new 2009 Subaru LEGACY CONCEPT
Debuts at the 2009 North American International Auto Show
- Concept car hints at future Legacy design language -
- Features Symmetrical AWD and 3.6-liter Boxer engine -

Detroit -- January 11, 2009 – Subaru of America, Inc. revealed the 2009 Subaru LEGACY CONCEPT today at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. The new LEGACY CONCEPT is a hint at the future of Legacy design. The design showcases the sport sedan heritage of the Subaru Legacy, but in more modern and purposeful package.

Marking the 20th anniversary of the Subaru Legacy, the LEGACY CONCEPT has been developed to showcase the Legacy’s sporting capabilities and features Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system mated to a Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine. The design concept is based on a larger 108.3 in. wheelbase designed to maximize interior space and provide comfortable accommodations for four adults.

The theme of concept design is "Presence", represented by the aggressive front facia and solid yet expressive body. Four powerful and defined wheel arches emphasize the dynamism of Symmetrical AWD. Sharp design lines carve out a substantial mass as they flow from the hood, across the roof to the trunk, while the sharp body lines project a sense of strength. Wedge-shaped Side Rear Vision Cameras are featured and provide a sense of flow from the momentum of the A-pillar lines. A character line runs from just before the A-pillar and sweeps up to the tail just above the taillamps.

This grille design incorporates a central wing motif that defines the Legacy’s Subaru brand identity. The Subaru logo separates a deep central grille shape that is accented by sharp headlamps with a dual vertical-row layout of multiple LED lamps. In addition, the slim, vertical fog lamps set in a large front valance with angular air intakes add a jewel-like touch to the front design. The LEGACY CONCEPT is finished in a special High-luster “Ultimate Silver” paint to accentuate the design's angular shapes.

The interior design features a striking four-seat layout that showcases the "High Definition" design theme. Comfort and style are achieved with a mix of touch-screens, cameras and modern surface coverings. The high-tech look blends with comfort through four separate seating areas, a high roofline and generous legroom for all passengers. The center console features a large touch-panel display that concentrates various functions for simplified use, while the flowing shape extends vertically to emphasize the feeling of strength and solidity in union with the exterior. A steering wheel and shift lever have been adapted to accentuate the sporty nature elemental in the Legacy’s DNA.

In-car entertainment is featured through monitors with multiple functions that are located in the center console, as well as in the rear of the front seat headrests to provide comfortable functionality as well a calm design that creates a relaxed ambiance for passengers. The monitor for the Side Rear Vision Camera has been situated toward the front of the roof to maximize rear visibility. The design is capped off with seats covered in pearl white leather that give off a blue sheen, while black metallic leather has been used for the door trim to create contrast with the instrument panel.

The Legacy was introduced globally in 1989, produced in Japan and Lafayette, Indiana. Since that date until November 2008, the total global production has exceeded 3.6 million vehicles making it Subaru's core model. During that period, Subaru’s core technologies of a Horizontally-Opposed engine and Symmetrical AWD have served to further the basic elements of automotive performance while continuously evolving for unparalleled handling, stability, and safety. This LEGACY CONCEPT incorporates the Legacy heritage while also serving as a concept model that provides an image of the new driving comfort and reliability that will continue to serve as a touchstone for Subaru.
